About the camp:

This camp is limited to 150 campers maximum.

A meal plan is included with camp fees and provides 7 days (brunch and dinner) of delicious, satisfying, full vegetarian meals (many world cuisines) prepared by Krishna Camp. Krishna Camp are probably the world's most experienced off grid wilderness chefs--these guys know how to cook in a dust storm, at high altitude and have cooked for 30,000 people at Rainbow gatherings.

The meal plan has been optional in the past, but this year we want to create and strengthen community within our camp around mealtime activities. We also find that eating together provides time to get to know our fellow campers.

We also have a Do It Yourself Snack Shack/Kitchen where you can make light meals and leave shared snacks, tea, drinks, etc. for others to enjoy.

(We will not have a bar -- but you'll find 10,000 free bars all over the playa if that's your thing.)

Questions? Contact our Registration coordinator at the contact page.

Registration will open the first week of June (or maybe sooner)

Step 1: Fill out the registration form: you will be clicking HERE

Step 2: Join the Sacred Spaces Google Group: (please feel free to join the Google group even if you aren't ready to register for the camp - you'll be able to see what we're up to.)

VOLUNTEERING:

All Sacred Spaces members are asked to contribute three, 3 hour work shifts, including two shifts during the week of Burning Man, and one shift during strike on Monday (or early arrival - the week before Burning Man). If you can come for build (before Thursday, August 26) or stay through strike (until Wednesday, September 8), you will be excused from Burn week shifts, as well as being refunded half your camp fees. On the registration form, you will be asked your preferred contribution(s), day(s), and time(s) of day. We will schedule you and let you know what your schedule will be.

Contributions:

Bhakti Stage (management/AV tech) - if you have skills in this area, please choose it. We'll have excellent performances every night!

Registration/Welcoming Team - Monday through Wednesday, we'll need a few campers to help newly arriving campers feel welcomed and get settled. This is a fun job in you like meeting new people or want to expand your greeting skills!

San Francisco Truck Team - There will be a moving truck bringing camp stuff from the SF bay area on the 22nd of August. We need a few helpers to help pack the truck and facilitate the organization of this very important work.

Healing Team - If you're any kind of healer - energy work, massage, etc., this is the job for you. You may or may not need to bring your own table. The healer's conclave will contact you to work out the logistics of serving with them.

MOOP Patrol - This is a very important job to perform throughout the week, as it makes the whole clean up job easier when we strike. (If you're new to Burning Man, MOOP stands for Matter out of Place and consists of any bits and particles of stuff we bring out to the Playa. This is a Leave No Trace event!)

Temple Guardian - a low key job spending time around the temple during performances and workshops.

*********************************************************************

Another way to participate in Sacred Spaces Village is to take the lead on one of the Temple spaces, in Build, Infrastructure, or Logistics. Lead positions are great opportunities to learn event management and production skills. Let us know if you'd like to be involved with the planning of the camp. We're a fun group and pride ourselves in weighing all opinions and making decisions democratically.

What does your Camp Registration pay for?

Camp registration funds materials for art installations in the Mystic Metropolis and building the temple structures.

Funds also pay for shared camp amenities such as showers, gray water collection, shade, and practical stuff like renting the camp truck, generator, fuel, storage locker, signage, lighting, extension cords, rebar, bungee cords, zip ties, tools, duct tape, etc.

BURNING MAN 101::SELF RELIANCE:

- You are responsible for purchasing your own Burning Man ticket in addition to camp fees.

You have to pack out ALL of your own trash and one bag of camp trash. Leave No Trace.

- your own sleep shelter/tent, tarp and bedding (and personal shade if desired.)

- your own shower bag

- your own cup, bowl and knife/fork/spoon/chopsticks. (Most bars on the playa will only serve you drinks if you have a cup.)

- You will need to bring 10 + gallons of water for your personal drinking water and showering. (Buy some big water containers and fill them at the Raley's store in Reno while you get ice and dry ice.)

- You will need to bring snacks and your own food and a cooler if you are not participating in the meal plan.

(But you can participate in the shared kitchen and eating areas.)

- Even in you ARE participating in the meal plan, it will be helpful to bring snacks for emergencies, as well as the long ride to and from the playa. A cooler is also excellent to have, so you can keep your drinks cold. Ice will be sold on the playa for cash. Here's a neat tip for keeping your cooler fresh:Cooler.

- You will be asked to contribute two 3 hour work shifts, either before or during Burning Man, and to contribute in Sacred Spaces community meetings and orientations during Burning Man.

- You will be asked to help with Strike (tear down) and clean up/MOOPing.

- You will want an old bicycle with big fat tires. (There are loaner bikes to borrow too.)

- Playa fashion can range from camping gear to haute fashion. Anything goes. But if you buy one thing it should be a warm coat -- most people wear old thrift store coats or faux fur coats you can buy for $15 at your local Goodwill. Funky warm boots (no spike heels!) are great too. Bring work clothes and work gloves for setup, a sun hat for day and a fur hat for night, and something for the heat (a sarong, a skirt) and something for the cold. (Warm pants, warm socks, gloves, etc...)

- We are asking everyone to bring one creative costume to wear during their Temple Guardian shift.

::2009 Survival Guide:: A must read for all...even crusty dusty oldtimers...

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/index.html

The 10 core guiding concepts of the Burning Man project.

http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html

THE BASICS YOU WILL NEED:

::Your ticket or Photo ID and confirmation number for "will call"

::1.5 gallons of water per person per day (for drinking, showering, washing, and food preparation).

::Carry a bottle of water with you at all times.

::First-aid kit. (Burning Man also has excellent First Aid stations and volunteer Doctors on staff.)

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/playa_firstaid.html

::Warm clothing for evenings - this is a desert at 4000 feet elevation!

::A good GEODESIC camp tent (or vehicle) is recommended along with warm sleeping bags & a tarp. Evening temperatures can be in the 40's. Days can be above 100. It sometimes rains heavily -- but only for a half hour or so. There are sometimes storms with winds of up to 70 mph. Vehicles can be hot during the day and cold at night--you might be more comfortable in a tent covered by a small pop up shade structure, carport or parachute.

::Plastic boxes with snap fitting lids and zip lock bags to store EVERYTHING.

:: LONG tent stakes or rebar and guy wires for your structure to secure it & tennis balls or empty water bottles to protect bare rebar.

::Garbage bags -- including extra ones for dirty laundry. You are responsible for packing out your own trash.

::Any required prescriptions, spare glasses and contact lens supplies or whatever else you need to maintain your health and comfort in a very remote area with no services for 100 miles.

::Flashlights, blinky lights and spare batteries (headlamps are useful) to be sure you can see and be seen at night. Also you want to light the front and back of your bike.

::Babywipes BABYWIPES BABYWIPES! And more babywipes!

::Hand sanitizer and extra toilet paper

::Sunscreen/sunblock lotion, sun hat and sunglasses

:: old laptop computer -- there actually is wireless DSL in the center camp for sending emergency messages home. Cellphones might or might not work. There is a pay phone in Gerlach.

::Common sense, tolerance, an open mind, and a positive attitude!

What is Burning Man?

Burning Man is an arts festival in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada that has been taking place every summer for over 20 years. Each year, during the week going into Labor Day weekend, thousands of people from across the globe come to the most desolate piece of natural land in America to build what is known as Black Rock City. Nearly 50,000 people, living in tents, RVs, and other strange structures share art in the harsh, dusty and alkaline desert for more than 7 days of celebration. To find out more about Burning Man, go to their website: BurningMan.com. Sacred Spaces is an unincorporated unofficial organization that has no affiliation with the Burning Man organization or Black Rock City, LLC.

What can I do to help?

Here's a priority list of help we need:

  1. Funding. Register with Sacred Spaces either to camp with us or get great Temple perks! Donate directly here!

  2. Temple Guardianship. Temple Guardians will be stationed throughout the Temple to guide, help, and witness participants' interactions with the Temple and the Sacred environment. They will act as vibe control, door guardians, healers, counselors, guides, and/or friends in time of need. This job requires that you attend one of our on-playa training sessions before the Burn or in the first few days of the Burn. Experience in Temple Guardianship is a plus, but training is absolutely required, since we will be administering to thousands of participants from every possible background, from every possible point on a spiritual path, and in every possible state of mind. To be a Temple Guardian, it is best for you to join the Sacred Spaces Google Group.

  3. Construction, General Hands, and Resources. In the building of a Temple of this magnitude, countless helping hands are needed for everything from sewing cushions, to buying fabric, to driving trucks, to putting up carports in sandstorms, to sweeping for moop, and more! Join the Sacred Spaces Google Group to find out more!

  4. Artist, Live Art Creation, Music, Workshop leaders, DJs & Performers! We are always looking to join forces with other artists and performers to create and explore transformational experience together. Join the Sacred Spaces Google Group to find out more!

How do I donate or register?

Our donation page can be found here (called, the "tithe" page). All you need is a paypal account to donate. If you don't have a paypal account and aren't able to start one, find a friend who can donate for you in exchange for your cash donation. We greatly appreciate your help!

Our registration page can be found here. You need a Paypal account to make a payment. Even if you do not have money at this time, we ask that you register with your general information, so we can have an accurate head count of the number of people camping with Sacred Spaces Camp.
